Between Circles and Squares
at Triangle Arts Association

03-05.2025

In the studio show Between Squares and Circles at Triangle Arts Association, Cindy Cheng I-Hsin presents the theme and progress of her three-month residency. The title is named after the shapes of things formed through studio experiments, where three basic forms metaphorically represent the creation of all things in the universe. Using locally sourced materials, the artist cuts old book pages into squares, handwrites ancient Han/Chinese characters, and arranges them neatly on the wall, whilst spherical models of various sizes are placed around the studio corners. Ancient source implies that ‘Han’ evokes the cosmic imagery of the Milky Way, a celestial river connecting the heavens and earth. This connection between language and the stars inspires the artist’s exploration of form and meaning. Through a research-driven exploration of language and the concept of printmaking, the artist reflects on the essence of life and living. Moving between New York’s diverse exhibitions, collections, and contemporary everyday life, the artist samples elements of misreading whilst carrying out a process unfolding through ongoing iteration.
